"After an initial short conflict between parts of the imperial guard and the rest of the army in 1960, the conflict over governmental power in Ethiopia was fought from the mid-1970s until 1991 and pitted a plethora of rebel groups against the Dergue, the military junta led by Mengistu Haile Mariam. After 16 years of at times extremely bloody fighting, the largest of the rebel groups, EPRDF, was able to oust Mengistu and seize power in the country on 28 May 1991."
