VIRTUAL WAR MEMORIALS

NUMBER OF NAMES CURRENTLY IN THE VIRTUAL MEMORIAL COLLECTION

348,522

The Virtual Memorial Collection is a compilation of existing virtual war memorials that are available online. Many of these lists were compiled by national governmental bodies such as armies and defence ministries, others by human rights organisations, concerned individuals or interest groups. Some were not primarily intended to commemorate victims of war but have been included in this collection since they constitute the only available online resource for that particular war. Read more about this section here.

The Virtual Memorial Collection contains as of today records, covering 48 wars, which in total displays the names of killed 348,522 people; military personnel as well as civilians.

One estimate (of many) of the number of killed as a result of war since 1945 is around 22,518,938 people, and the names presented here constitute a mere 1.5% of the total count. It should be said that the figure in some cases also includes excess deaths, not only battle deaths. A commonly used figure for battle deaths over the same period of time is 10 million people The second world war may have been the bloodiest in the history of mankind but the bloodshed continues with ever more civilians caught in the crossfire or deliberatly targeted.

Stop for a moment before you enter. You may find it offensive to find your adversaries displayed alongside your mates or relatives. You may find it offensive to find military web sites alongside such run by peace movements or human rights organisations. We ask you to put those feelings behind for the time being and show respect to all those who are commemorated here and their families.
