2014-03-17: List of wars since 1900

Over the last weeks there has been some minor updates to the list of wars since 1900. Information has been added to a dozen or so articles and a few titles have been changed. Only a few articles had their fatality data altered. A new function is categories which might be of help for those who search for wars pertaining to a specific historical theme. More categories will be added in the future.

2013-08-06: List of wars since 1900

During the first week of August 2013 I reviewed and updated the List of wars since 1900. The whole list is now, with a few exceptions, based on three datasets: Correlates of War (COW) version 4.0, which cover most of the time period 1900-1945, Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO), Battle-deaths dataset version 3.0, which has been used for wars that started after 1946 and ended before 1989, and Uppsala Conflict Data Program (UCDP), battle-deaths dataset version 5.0, for wars that started after 1989. There is some overlap between the three datasets.

Readers should be aware that most, but not all fatality numbers are battle-related deaths. Some records does however include one-sided violence against civilians from UCDP:s One-sided Violence Dataset v 1.4. I'm currently planning to include civilian deaths from one-sided violence in all war records for the next update.

For a discussion on the definitions of war, fatality data and a bibliography of the sources see the sources page.
