Quote from UCDP:s Conflict Encyclopedia

"2013 was the most violent year since South Sudan gained independence. This was mainly the result of fighting involving the rebel group SPLM/A - In Opposition which started in mid-December. The violence pitted different factions of the presidential guard in Juba against one another. One faction was loyal to President Salva Kiir, and the other loyal to former Vice-President Riek Machar. The latter was ousted from the government in July 2013. Although it started late in the year, the violence passed the threshold of war (at least 1000 battle-related deaths in a year). During the year, a second rebel group, SSDM/A - Cobra Faction, also fought the government, but in comparison this fighting was limited."
