"Oromiya is the largest Ethiopian state and the Oromo ethnic group makes up around half of the 55 million Ethiopian inhabitants. Marginalised in the political and economical life of the country, the rebel group OLF launched an armed struggle for independence in 1973. The conflict has been ongoing since then, initially pitting the rebels against the Dergue military regime and since 1992 against the EPRDF-led government."
