This memorial, which is located at the Bom Sucesso Fort in central Lisbon commemorates the soldier that fell in the Portuguese Colonial War (Portuguese: Guerra Colonial), also known as the Overseas War in Portugal (Portuguese: Guerra do Ultramar) or in the former colonies as the War of liberation (Portuguese: Guerra de Libertação), which was fought between Portugal´s military and the emerging nationalist movements in Portugal´s African colonies between 1961 and 1974.
